Dave, regarding your was/were in the note, "were" is the correct choice. Reason? Anytime you say something that is a wish or a desire, you use "were." To get nerdy, it's called subjunctive mood.

I can write something and scan it and then email it to you - that's the only way I can think of to show you something. But to warn you, my handwriting SUCKS, unless I go slowly.

And your handwriting isn't as bad as you may think. It's very consistent and (even though on lined paper) straight. Some people have it going all over the place.
